The potential bid is also supported by The Committee for Melbourne, an assembly of leaders from academic business and community fields. Chief executive Kate Roffey said, "Melbourne has collectively the best array of sport facilities close to the CBD of any city in the world, so we're perfectly positioned to head an Olympic Games".[9]
It is most likely that Hamburg will apply for Germany, as polls in in Hamburg and Berlin show that most inhabitants in Berlin do not support the bid, while Hamburg's population backs up the application for the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics.[16]
The city of Hamburg will make a study of hosting the Olympics in either 2024 or 2028, and after proposal by the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, the study will also look into the possibility of a joint Hamburg-Copenhagen bid, although this will demand a change of the Olympic Charter.[18]
By 2024, it will have been 28 years since the United States last hosted the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. New York City bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics but lost to London. Chicago made a bid for the 2016 Games but lost to Rio de Janeiro. The United States did not bid for the 2020 Olympics. In July 2012, the USOC ruled out bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics and is focusing on bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics or the 2026 Winter Olympics.[30] On 19 February 2013, the USOC sent out letters to the mayors of 35 cities to gauge their interest in hosting the 2024 Olympics. Some of the cities included were Chicago, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Memphis, Minneapolis–Saint Paul, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, St. Louis, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle, Charlotte, Portland, Phoenix, Columbus, Nashville, Rochester and Denver.[31] On 10 June 2014, the USOC met in Boston to confirm the shortlist of cities drawn up for the 2024 Olympics.[32] On 13 June 2014, the USOC announced their shortlist for potential host cities: Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington.[33] On 25 July 2014, city leaders from the four cities met with the USOC to hear about the nuts and bolts of bidding for the 2024 Olympics.[34] On 26 September 2014, The U.S. Olympic Committee received near-unanimous support from the country's sports federations in a poll asking whether they would support a bid for the 2024 Olympics. Forty of the 47 national governing bodies took part in the poll and all 40 answered positively to the question.[35] Four Cities was deadline on Dec.1,2014 and USOC will board meeting and vote on United States bid of four cities on Dec.16,2014.[36]
On 2 December 2014 Boston officially submitted their bid.[62]
According to IOC rules, Lima needs to confirm whether it wants to be an applicant city for 2024 or wants to host an IOC Session instead. One of the IOC rules stipulates that a NOC not bidding for 2024 can host the 2017 IOC Session only. Yet, according to this article, Lima wants to host that, too, which is not allowed whatsoever.[69] On top of that, Around the Rings has reported that Lima is potentially wanting to host the World Games 2021, too.[70]
On 8 September 2013 IOC added wrestling to Olympic programme for 2020 and 2024 Games.[94] FILA changed freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling weight classes for men and decreased to 6 categories in order to add more weights for women.[95]
