Excerpt
Egoism operates on the hedonic principle in a desire-driven manner, resulting in negative emotions and fluctuations in happiness. This Buddhist critique of pleasure-seeking has been supported by recent research indicating that the hedonic principle does not predict lasting happiness. When a stimulus is present, associated pleasure arises, but once the stimulus disappears or is replaced, that positive feeling diminishes, leading to hedonic adaptation—where individuals quickly acclimate to the effects of new stimuli and return to their baseline happiness levels
