With a constant need for entertaining copy Alan earned a good side income by writing short stories for the "Sun" Short Story section; here are a selection of 16 of these stories published in the 1940's and 50's which reveal his inner novelist, a great story teller of the less is more school. A talent which would resurface again in his retirement with critically acclaimed novels 'Lost Expectations' (2011) and 'The Returning' (2013).

Summary
At age 18 aspiring writer Alan James Wardrope got his dream job, secured a cadetship with Associated Newspapers to train to become a journalist with the prominent Sydney newspaper The Sun. Embarking on a career modern journalism students could only dream of. Taking him to Hollywood where he moved in the highest circles of power, before returning to Australia at the invitation of the government to help launch its motion picture industry on the world stage in the 1970's.
