Despite the security which surrounded this mission there is suspicion that within the crew of the Light Stare is a traitor. The are an unarmed ship up against incredible odds and they have already see how vulnerable their small ship is and what would happen it it were attacked.

“Light Star” is all to do with money and power, when the only interstellar servicing planet between the old empire and the new expanding frontier suddenly exploded, the economic collapse of the old empire was imminent.

Chapter 16 - - LITTLE MOON, BIG PLANET "You're God’s own bastard, Raftos,” said Venscottie "No, I'm my own bastard let’s leave the Gods out of this,” said Raftos. "Now you were just about to explain all about these little green jump gates.” "No I wasn't,” said Venscottie. "I'm getting too old and tired for all this. If I had been a bit dumber when I was young I wouldn't have been selected for the Star Knights, or have to carry all these star maps around in my head, keep secrets, plan strategies, shadow bandits around the universe. I could have been a farmer, letting the seasons of the crops dictate the rhythms of my life. I could look at the stars in wonder rather than calculating what has moved and how far since I last looked.” "But you did build them,” said Packet. "No,” said Venscottie. "Until Harris here mentioned it I did not know you knew anything about them, nobody is supposed to know about them. Strange as it may seem, we do not know who built them, or when they were built, or why.” "But you use them,” said Harris. "I've seen you on the Navigon unit.” "Ah, the Navigon units,” said Venscottie. "There was no time to sift out our own movements, we assumed you would dismiss the data as anomalies. We could not know you had found a gate and guessed its purpose.”
