Firms reported more than 33,000 pending biotech-related patent applications, compared to about 24,000 currently held. (p.9) Most biotech firms are small and medium-size enterprises. The majority of respondents (90%) reported 500 or fewer employees. About one-quarter of firms reported 10 or fewer employees; about 59% of firms reported 50 or fewer employees.
