The WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardization (1964a) asked the Central Veterinary Laboratory, Weybridge, to obtain a quantity of tylosin suitable for use as an international reference preparation and to arrange a collaborative assay. Eli Lilly & Co., Indianapolis, Ind., USA, generously donated 150 g of a highly purified preparation of tylosin. The purity of the preparation had been confirmed by paper chromatographic and solubility analyses and its identity with the manufacturer's house standard demonstrated by infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Its potency was stated to be 1CmO pglmg.
