In revising the Manual on t:pidemiological evaluation and surveillance in malarla eradication a broader treatment has been given to the subject matter as is indicated in the change of title. The Manual is thus somewhat more than a detailed operational gulde for procedures in epidemiological evaluat~on and surveillance in malaria eradication programmes For one thing, consideration is given to pre-eradication and control programmes but, more important, epidemiology is seen as something more than the collection and tabulation of data confined to malaria parasites, vectors and cases of malaria. To be able to make a proper assessment of the progress of malaria eradication at any time the epidemiologist must have other information in addition to that concerning agent, vector and host factors in the same way as an epidemiologist working in other fields. This does not imply an extension of his operations but means that he must take an active interest in all aspects of the malaria service and even seek information from sources outside it. But, more than this, the epidemiologist must act as a guide and stimulant to action. This does not mean a takeover of the direction of the programme, but rather the epidemiologist acts as the member of the team who provides the intelligence service for its Director and the information he supplies indicates the appropriate action and its timing. Thus an important part of the role of the epidemiologist in malaria programmes is participation ln overall planning. Considerable attention is given to epidemiological methods but, for some of the techniques, a section is provided as a guide to the contents of other manuals which are available.
