Falls from elevations occur in all industries, in all occupations, and in a myriad of work settings, from the ironworker connecting steel columns 200 feet in the air, to the laborer washing windows from a suspended scaffold 60 feet from the ground, to the stock clerk retrieving goods from a shelf using a 4-foot stepladder. Fatal falls from elevations are classified by external cause of death codes (E-codes) E880-E888 of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, (ICD-9). For the purpose of this monograph, the following categories will be discussed: 1) falls from ladders (E881.0), 2) falls from scaffolding (E881.1), 3) falls from or out of buildings or other structures (E882), 4) other falls from one level to another (e.g., falls from stationary vehicles and falls from trees) (E884.9), and 5) other and unspecified falls (E888). The Ecodes E885, E886 (falls on the same level), and E887 (falls resulting in fractures with cause unspecified), were excluded from this monograph since these types of falls were not investigated as part of the FACE program. Figure 1 illustrates examples of common elevated working environments.
