KL118, formerly Warisan Merdeka (English: Heritage of Independence), is a 610 m (2,000 ft) tall skyscraper with 118 storeys, which is currently under construction in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The construction has a budget of RM5 billion.[3] When completed in 2020, it will be the tallest building in Malaysia, succeeding the Petronas Twin Towers, which has 88 stories[1][4] and consists of 400,000 square metres of residential, hotel and commercial space.[5]

It is being constructed within the vicinity of Plaza Rakyat, MBSKL, Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara.[3] The project will be funded by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).[6]

The piling and foundation works for the project have been awarded to Pintaras Geotechnics Sdn Bhd.[7][8]

Finnish company Kone has been awarded a contract to supply 105 escalators and elevators for the project.[9]

Criticism

Many have criticised this project, saying that it is a wasteful project and the RM5 billion funds could have been used for other causes like poverty, education and roads.[6]

In response to the criticism, the Prime Minister said that the project is not a waste and will bring more benefits.[6]

First planned to be slightly taller than 509 m (1,670 ft), surpassing Taipei 101, the proposed height of Warisan Merdeka Tower has been revised to 610 m (2,000 ft). There is speculation that only the spire is extended without adding further number of floors to the originally-planned 100-storey structure.
