Book of poetry

Journey to the West

By: Wu Cheng'en; Anthony C. Yu, Translator, editor

Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. It was written in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty and attributed to Wu Cheng'en. The novel is a fictionalized account of the legendary pilgrimage to India of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang, and loosely based its source from the historic text Great Tang Records on the Western Regions and traditional folk tales. The monk travelled to the "Western Regions" during the Tang Dynasty, to obtain sacred texts (sūtras). The bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), on instruction from the Buddha, gives this task to the monk and his three protectors in the form of disciples — namely Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing — together with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang's steed, a white horse. These four characters have agreed to help Xuanzang as an atonement for past sins. Journey to the West has a strong background in Chinese folk religion, Chinese mythology and value systems; the pantheon of Taoist immortals and Buddhist bodhisattvas is still reflective of Chinese religious beliefs today. Enduringly popular, the tale is at once an adventure story, a...

The Delineation of the Day Signs in the Aztec Manuscripts

By: T.T. Waterman

Calendar symbols of one sort or another occur on a surprising variety of monuments, both of early and late periods. The most important of these monuments for the study of the workings of the calendar system in detail are certain remarkable picturebooks or manuscripts, made on folded strips of deerskin, or on paper made of the fibre of the maguey (Agave americana). These manuscripts are usually spoken of as "codices." Only a few of these native manuscripts survived the introduction of European civilization into America. Those which were preserved were taken to Europe as curiosities, and often preserved through mere luck. The ones still extant have received a great deal of attention since the early part of the last century. All but a few of the originals are still in Europe, and are at the present time considered priceless....

On the Processes for the Production of Ex Libris (Book Plates)

By: John Vinycomb

Mr. Vinycomb has in these articles aimed to give his readers a practical dissertation upon the modes of execution, rather than upon the history and classification of styles in the production of book-plates; and in this he has certainly departed from the beaten track, and has furnished a very concise and clear account of the various processes by which our book-plates are produced and reproduced, and the numerous and ingenious methods of manipulation resorted to in their manufacture....

The Skyracos Dicta

By: John Picha

This genuine sci-fi artifact comes from another world and is a companion piece to the Skyraco ePulps. This souvenir collectable is a must-download for any Skyraco fan across the Earth. The Skyracos Dicta was compiled from the notes of Ozgood Price, the first and most famous Skyraco. He meant for it to act as an operational guide, a code of conduct, a credo, a list of virtues, commandments, prime directives, and most importantly, a method for survival. Now, long after his untimely demise, the Dicta is a part of every recruit's training manual and Ozgood's words continue to inspire new generations of Skyracos. It's often quoted by the high-flying heroes during their adventures in Zoland System. Some can hear the voice of Ozgood within the words of the cryptic code while others inevitably see what they want or bend the messages to meet their needs. You may even discover something about yourself once you look inside......
