Giancarlo Galan (Padua, 10 September 1956) is an Italian politician.[1]

Political career

After having been a Liberal activist in the 1970s and the 1980s, he was not active in politics until he joined Forza Italia since its foundation in 1994. In the same year he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

In 1995 he ran successfully for the President of the Veneto Region. He was re-elected in 2000 and 2005. He was not re-candidated by Berlusconi's party in 2010, as the Region's presidency was deemed to go a Northern League politician.

He was Minister of Agriculture in Silvio Berlusconi's fourth cabinet since 16 April 2010 to 23 March 2011, filling the place vacated by Luca Zaia (Northern League), who had been elected president of the Veneto Region at his place. He also served as Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities. On 4 June 2014 Venice Magistracy requested the Parliament for authorization to proceed against Galan for bribery, extortion and money laundering in the framework of the inquiry about the MOSE_Project.[2]On 21 June 2014 the Parliament approved the request and Galan was conducted to the Opera prison in Milan.[3]
