Journey Thru America : My Quest For Peace

By: Gary L Beer

Travelling the back roads across America in a seven month, eighteen thousand mile journey brought out survival instincts and a perception of life in Gary that we all possess and rarely experience in this modern world that we live. The result is clearly written in Journey Thru America, My Quest for Peace, in which Gary describes his incredible journey in such a way that the reader experiences the excitement and travelling as if they are experiencing it themselves. Gary speaks his mind of America and American people that is controversial at times and thought provoking. ...

My journey really begins in Virginia, in the ‘Bible Belt’ of America in September 2002 living with a witch of the Wicca cult called Tigerlilly. Tigerlilly had no appearance of being a witch, being blonde and dressing in middle class American clothes. Tigerlilly drove a new metallic silver coloured Dodge car and lived in a trailer on a large trailer park a few miles from the city. By all outward appearances all appeared normal from the outside of her trailer home; with flowers and shrubs surrounding the 60 foot long white trailer. Wooden steps led up to the front door where a large black and white plastic owl stood guard from the top of a railing post. The inside of the trailer also appeared to be middle class American; the lounge was nicely decorated in wheat coloured wallpaper with patterns of dried grass. Pictures of a bearded Jesus were on every wall, tending his flock of white sheep and generally looking holy. The trailer also had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen diner and a room that was dedicated to the worship of her gods. Fierce upright blood coloured dragons about a foot tall stood upon large shiny black columns that f...

Kerala Hugged: A Travelogue (Munnar/Kochi/Alleppey/Varkala)

By: Ankur Mutreja

In a borderless world, all would be travelers indeed. India is a small borderless world in itself, and Kerala lies at its southernmost tip. The author lives near the lovely Kashmir, but does that make Kerala any less lovely! This book is indeed author's baby born out of his love of nature. "Writing books is the closest men ever came to having children." --Norman Mailer Kerala is beautiful not only because of "God" but also because of the people who have made Kerala their home. The author went there as a parasite in the disguise of a tourist and sucked all he could in a short span of 23 days. But did anybody ever complain? No, never. The Keralans believe the joy multiplies by sharing, and hereby the author emulates them. The book is divided into four chapters concentrated on four famous locations in Kerala: Munnar, Kochi, Alleppey and Varkala. The author's experience in Munnar has been presented as a love story, albeit with nature. Kochi is where the author enlivened and discovered himself as a younger person, and the experience is shared in a canvas of activities involving art, history, luxury, people and sports. Alleppey ...

Trekking in Nepal allows you to explore the beautiful nature, flora and faunas residing on the highs and lows of trekking trails. The heavenly mountains and snow peaked Himalayas residing in Nepal provide your soul and body with both a positive spark and with divinity. Trekking in mountainous regions and adventure are synonymous with each other, as you get an adventure of a lifetime on the trail leading to the Himalayas. Trekking adventures in Nepal started in 1949, when a British adventurer, Bill Tilman, made treks to various regions of Nepal, including Kali Gandaki, Helambu and the Everest Region. His exploits of these treks are described in ‘Nepal Himalaya’, a mountaineering classic that has been reprinted by the Seattle Mountaineers as a part of the Tilman Collection. Another visitor was Maurice Herzog, who led a French expedition to the base of Mount Everest. After opening its frontiers to the outside world in 1949, ten out ...

Drobeta Turnu Severin - Mehedinti, Romania

By: Nicolae Sfetcu

The modern town of Drobeta Turnu Severin has a relatively new history. It made its appearance on the map of Romania and on that of the world following General Pavel Kiseleff’s decree on the 22nd of April, 1833. The town got its name from the majestic remains of the Severin Fortress which used to look down the Danube and surrounding region at some ancient times. It was erected following a pre-established plan, with wide streets falling perpendicularly onto the Danube or running parallel to it. Drobeta Turnu Severin has warm summers and mild winters, meaning the city is home to magnolia trees, Caucasian nut trees, and gingko biloba as well as the almond trees, figs, lilacs, lindens, and chestnut trees more common throughout Europe. The museum of the Iron Gates Hydropower Station together with the Turbine Hall, the Vodita Monastery, as well as the St. Ann Monastery of Orsova can be easily reached from Turnu Severin. It is from this region that the wonderful area of Cazane becomes accessible both by water and by land. ,,Turnu Severin shows itself in the sunset as in the middle of a decor. Widened, the Danube cuts a curve in the Roma...

Travelling alone the journey back is filled with excitement and adventure as Gary meets many fascinating and hilarious characters who also travel this huge country. ...

I stop at the northern elephant seal colony north of San Simeon pulling in to the large gravel car park, for I do not intend to say farewell just yet. I plan to camp near Morro Bay before heading out into the desert and want to spend one last weekend in this area. February is a good time to visit the seal colony with the pups a few weeks old and fattening up in readiness for the sea. Soon the adults will leave the pups to their fate, after weaning it will be up to the pups to teach themselves to swim and hunt for food. The baby elephant seals have changed enormously in the few days that I have been away, appearing to have doubled in size they now look fit to burst. The babies are also lighter in colour as they turn from the black of newborn to a grey; that will take on a silver hue for when their time comes in a few weeks to head out into the Pacific Ocean. A lot of the baby seals have pulled themselves away from the beach and are now amongst the sand dunes some even pushing up hard against the fence that borders the highway! The beach is quiet with a lot of the females now gone leaving the big bulls to guard what remains of the...

Volunteer Cookbook : Karen, Burmese and Western Dishes from our Oprhanage

By: Dr. Sabine Elisabeth Roper

I wrote this book to support our fundraising. I wanted to have something original to give back to donors. Another reason was, that our volunteers enjoyed our food and wanted to know, how to cook it. This was an easy way to achieve this. Some dishes they learnt to cook during their stay with us, but not all and it was nice for them to look them up again at home. As our youngest son has Celiac this book contains many Gf dishes as well as vegetarian dishes. Burmese food is very delicious and very different from the better known Thai food....

08.07.2010     Life in France is lighter. In America's most stressful. I wrote the winding sheet that I would like to return to Fran-ce as a worker (researcher or professor at a university).     Most of the HAL (short for Hyper Articles en Ligne - Online Articles excess, is an open archive pol-Onate by the Centre for Direct Scientific Communication, France) claim to have an archive open to all scientists, but it is not free , as it ...

Hawaii Place Names

By: Esther Mookini

In this latest book, John Clark, author of the highly regarded "Beaches of Hawaii" series, gives us the many captivating stories behind the hundreds of Hawaii place names associated with the ocean—the names of shores, beaches, and other sites where people fish, swim, dive, surf, and paddle. Significant features and landmarks on or near shores, such as fishponds, monuments, shrines, reefs, and small islands, are also included. The names of surfing sites are the most numerous and among the most colorful: from the purely descriptive (Black Rock, Blue Hole) to the humorous (No Can Tell, Pray for Sex). Clark began gathering information for the "Beaches" series in 1972, and during the years that followed interviewed hundreds of informants, many of them native Hawaiians, and consulted dozens of Hawaiian reference books, newspapers, and maps. A significant amount of the oral history he collected was unrecorded and remained only in his notebooks and memory. Hawaii Place Names: Shores, Beaches, and Surf Sites is the final product of those years of research, and like its popular predecessors, it benefits substantially from Clark's ...

In 1966 the University of Hawaii Press published the first edition of Place Names of Hawaii. Written by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert, it contained 1,125 entries, all of which were place names in the Hawaiian language. In 1974 the press published the second edition by Pukui, Elbert, and Esther T. Mookini. It contained some four thousand entries, and this time it included place names in English and other languages. This edition, in the words of the authors, provided "a glossary of important place names in the State, including names of valleys, streams, mountains, land sections, surfing areas, towns, villages, and Honolulu streets and buildings." During the years that have followed its publication, the second edition of Place Names of Hawaii has become a standard reference in the literature of Hawaii....

Fotografii îngândurate : Album din Deşert (Thoughtful Photos : Album of the Desert)

By: Florentin Smarandache
